About
‘Like every other boy – unlike every other boy’. These are some of the first sung words in AS ONE. Even though it is a story about a transgender person - someone whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex - it is not a transgender story. it is an essential human story about about the journey of becoming One, Whole, True. We take this journey like every other human, unlike every other human.
As Henry David Thoreau said, “you are a marvel.” Everyone on our planet is a marvel and different and special in their own way.“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” wrote Audre Lorde, a poet and revolutionary Black feminist.
That is the power of the arts – to make us think and reflect, to open new doors into worlds we didn’t know, to remind us of what we each have to offer, and what we all have in common; to help us understand our history and imagine our future; to give us hope in the moments of struggle; and to bring us together when nothing else will.
To stand together As One. That is what we celebrate.
